Highland Park Democrats Look to Fill Council Vacancy

The Highland Park Democratic Municipal Committee will interview candidates on July 16 to determine who will take the place of Councilwoman Susan Welkovits, who passed away on July 3 following an illness.

Because Ms. Welkovits was a Democrat, the Democratic Committee has, by law, 15 days from the creation of the vacancy to recommend three names to the Borough Council. The Council then has an additional 15 days to choose from the three names submitted. Council members will make their decision immediately following an interview session on July 21, which is the governing body’s next meeting.

According to a Facebook post published on the Highland Park Democrats’ Facebook page, interested parties must email a current resume to: smfessant@gmail.com or by mail to Highland Park Democratic Municipal Committee, PO Box 4794, Highland Park, NJ, 08904-4794. Resumes must be received by July 15.

The announcement advises people to call (732) 539-8509 with additional questions.

Candidates should be prepared to present themselves for interview via Zoom. Interviews will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2020.
