Marking the beginning of a new, “community-oriented” era at the Highland Park Police Department, the Borough has appointed Lt. Rick Abrams as its new acting chief and Sgt. Jose Curbelo as its new captain. The two will be formally introduced to the community this Wednesday, April 17, 7 p.m., at a meet-and-greet at the Highland Park Community Center.
Chief Abrams succeeds retired Chief Stephen Rizco, who served as the Borough’s top cop since 2008. Cpt. Curbelo fills a position that had been vacant since his predecessor, Scott Golden, retired in 2016.
“Highland Park can be a model for a 21st century ideal of an equitable, inclusive community. Our police leadership is integral to that ideal and I can speak for the community when I say we look forward to working with them, and giving essential constructive feedback when necessary,” Mayor Brill Mittler said in a statement.
