At the Tuesday March 7, 2017 Highland Park Borough Council meeting, Highland Park resident and community activist Stephany Kim was sworn in as the borough’s new councilwoman. She is taking the seat of former Councilman Jim Walsh, who resigned in February to relocate to California. Ms. Kim’s term goes to Dec. 31, 2017. If she wishes to serve the remainder of Mr. Walsh’s term that expires at the end of 2018, Ms. Kim – and any other potential candidate – would have to run for the municipal seat in November 2017 election.
Mayor Gayle Brill Mittler administered the oath of office to Ms. Kim, after council members made the selection among the three candidates selected for consideration by the Highland Park Democratic Municipal Committee. Since Mr. Walsh was a Democrat, it was the Democratic Municipal Committee responsible for coming up with replacement candidates. No stranger to the politics in Highland Park, Councilwoman Kim has served as campaign treasurer for Mayor Brill Mittler’s mayoral campaign, member of the Highland Park Planning Board, and county committeewoman for Highland Park’s Democratic Municipal Committee.
Councilwoman Kim is the manager of the Edison Branch of BCB Community Bank.
