A former employee of a Highland Park daycare was arraigned Friday, July 17, 2015, in the death of an infant under her care last fall.
Tanya Choy of Martinsville was arraigned in state Superior Court in Middlesex County. Ms. Choy formerly worked for Above and Beyond Child Care Center on South Third Avenue. No cause of death was ever found for the infant, a phenomenon known in the medical field as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome that in New Jersey affects one baby in every 2,800 live births.
“I really don’t have any comments for the press,” Ms. Choy’s attorney, Matthew Teeter of Roberts & Teeter Attorneys at Law LLC in Somerset, said on Monday. “When the case is over, I’ll be happy to discuss.”
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office has not publicly explained the basis for the charge. Spokesman James O’Neill did not return requests for comment following the arraignment.
Mr. Teeter said a status conference has been scheduled to discuss the case with the Prosecutor’s Office in August. He said there is no clear time table for the case to reach court.
“It could be a year, it could be a year-and-a-half,” he said.
Above and Beyond has operated from Highland Park Conservative Temple – Congregation Anshe Emeth since 2010.
